Here we are again, Friday! Thanks to the long weekend, this short, four-day work-week flew by. Although this time around we only have two days to relax and enjoy ourselves, there is lots to choose from. Whether you want to get together with friends over brunch, spend quality time with the pup or just sit around and gaze at the stars, there’s something for everyone this weekend. Here’s my TOP5 things to do in Toronto. Have fun!
Woofstock – Dog lovers will descend on Woodbine Park this weekend for Toronto’s annual festival of all things canine. There will be plenty of vendors hawking treats, leashes and everything else a dog owner could possibly want, but even for those without pets there will be plenty to do. There are scheduled events, like the Running of the Pugs and the Woofstock Fashion Show, and the people-watching is always fun. Keep an eye out for skateboarding bulldogs.
Doors Open Toronto – For one weekend a year, buildings across Toronto open their doors to the public during this festival. This year’s theme, Secrets and Spirits: Exploring the Mysteries Behind the Door, is about the supernatural stories and spaces that haunt the buildings. Participating buildings include the City TV and Omni building at Yonge & Dundas, the historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre, The Daniels Spectrum and Toronto City Hall, both the old and new buildings. Buildings participating for the first time this year include the Arcadian, the Fort York armory, The Great Hall and Gibraltar Point Lighthouse.
Pedestrian Sunday at Kensington Market – The home to several generations of immigrants from around the world as well as the hippy movement in the sixties, the neighborhood is one of the most diverse in Toronto and also home to an exploding food scene. Kensington Market is kicking off block-party season this weekend with the first Pedestrian Sunday of 2014. Bands and other types of performers will entertain crowds throughout the day. Street foods on offer typically include Portuguese grilled sardines, tacos and fresh oysters.
O&B Brunch With BENNYFITS - Sunday is brunch day, so if you’re thinking of meeting up with the girls to catch up over eggs benny and mimosas, you can’t go wrong with Oliver & Bonacini. Every weekend before 4pm throughout the summer, O&B Café Grill at Yonge and Front offers $3 Caesars and mimosas and $1 from every eggs Benedict will be donated to Fife House, a provider of secure and supportive affordable housing and services to people living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Toronto Area.
Meteor Shower Watching – Sometime very late Friday evening or the very early hours of Saturday, we’re likely to experience one of the biggest, best meteor showers of the year, if not the last several years. This has to do with fact that Earth will be traversing a cloud of space dust about a million kilometres thick. Of course the shower is not a sure thing as most experts agree that meteor showers are hard to predict, especially in cases like this one. But if you’re sitting out in the backyard or terrace bundled up in a warm blanket and your favourite glass of wine in hand, that doesn’t really matter, does it? Regular stars will do just fine.
